Jonas Vingegaard is closing in on the purple jersey after securing victory in stage 16 of the Vuelta a Espana.
Following on from Monday’s relaxation day, Denmark’s Vingegaard nade a profitable late transfer in Tuesday’s stage from Liencres Playa to an uphill end in Bejes.
Jumbo-Visma’s Vingegaard immediately pulled away from the pack within the closing 4km of the course.
He secured his second stage win of the competitors in 2:38:23, with Finn Fisher-Black ending 43 seconds behind him and Wout Poels third.
Vingegaard’s victory sees him edge nearer to catching up with team-mate and purple jersey chief Sepp Kuss, with the Tour de France champion now 29 seconds behind Kuss within the basic classification.
Primoz Roglic attacked on the ultimate kilometre of the race, pushing him as much as third within the basic classification and subsequently prolonged Jumbo-Visma’s dominance within the prime three.
Stage 17 on Wednesday is a mountain stage and appears set set to show a tricky process, with riders competing from Ribadesella to Altu de l’Angliru.
