Sweden mulls constructing new small nuclear reactors

Sweden’s state-owned vitality firm Vattenfall is investigating
the potential for putting in new small modular nuclear reactors
(SMRs) on the website of an current nuclear energy plant to safe
energy provide, Aftonbladet newspaper reported on Wednesday, Trend reviews citing
Xinhua.

Vattenfall, majority proprietor of the Ringhals nuclear energy plant
within the southwest of the nation, has notified grid operator Svenska
Kraftnat that it intends to put in 2,800 megawatts on prime of
Ringhals’ present output of two,190 megawatts and to attach the
first new reactor to the grid by 2032, the newspaper reported.

A spokesperson for Vattenfall instructed Swedish Television (SVT) final
November that “large-scale nuclear power is not feasible today” and
Aftonbladet reported that the utility could as an alternative intention to construct
a number of SMRs, every with an output of between 300 and 400
megawatts.

Minister for Climate and the Environment Romina Pourmokhtari
instructed Aftonbladet that though smaller reactors could not provide the
similar financial system of scale, they produce other benefits, comparable to that
“they are said to be cheaper and quicker to build.”

“2032 may be very bold however it’s pressing that (building) is
as rapidly as attainable,” Pourmokhtari instructed Aftonbladet.

Nuclear energy accounts for roughly 30 % of the
electrical energy produced in Sweden, in accordance with the Swedish Radiation
Safety Agency.

Following the decommissioning of 4 reactors between 2017 and
2020, six reactors presently stay at three websites, in accordance with
the company.
