Since the announcement of the Jal Jeevan Mission on August 15, 2019, four crore rural families have been provided with tap water connections so far.
Seven states will be given a grant under the Water Life Mission.
Seven states have qualified to get incentive money for 2020-21 under Jal Jivan Mission. This state will ensure water supply to every villager by 2024. These states include Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Sikkim, Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh.
Criteria for performance incentive grants include physical and financial progress under JJM, the functionality of pipe water supply schemes and the ability to use funds.
3.16 crore families got tap connection
On Saturday, Water Power Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat approved an incentive of Rs 465 crore to these states. In spite of the CoVid-19 epidemic and lockdown, the rapid implementation of the Water Life Mission on the ground has set an example and, during the financial year, has provided tap connections to more than 3.16 crore rural households.
4 crores people have got the facility so far
Currently, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Goa and Telangana states have become ‘Har Ghar Jal’ states. The government has accelerated the delivery of water to rural areas. Since the announcement of the Jal Jeevan Mission on August 15, 2019, four crore rural families have been provided with tap water connections so far. With this, the water supply through tap has increased from 3.23 crore (17%) to 7.20 crore (37.6%).
Gujarat’s performance is the best
Gujarat has the best performance in ensuring the supply of tap water in every household under the Jal Jeevan Mission. Gujarat had created such a model in 2002, which included piping water to everyone’s home. By doing this, Gujarat changed its picture when it was known to deliver water from tankers.
After facing water scarcity in the last decade, with the launch of Jal Jeevan Mission, the Himachal Pradesh government is working to ensure the supply of tap water to rural households.
Five states of Northeast will get incentive money
Despite the North Eastern states, hilly areas and forest areas, the Water Life Mission is implemented with speed and scale. This is the first time that 5 northeastern states have qualified for the performance incentive money. The Ministry of Water Power has been focused in improving the water supply with the implementation of the Water Life Mission.
Minister has done many trips
Union Minister Shekhawat held several review meetings along with visits to the northeastern states to expedite implementation. The National Water Life Mission, as a part of the Ministry of Water Power, sent several teams of experts to help these states to plan better and get the job done quickly. Under the Jal Jeevan Mission, these northeastern states have become one of the best states in terms of performance.
11,000 crores allocated
The provision of Performance Incentive Fund under the Jal Jeevan Mission has created a healthy competition among the states, which will help to ensure rapid implementation and supply of this mission. The mission aims to improve the standard of living of the people of the country by 2024 and provide domestic tap water connections in every rural household. Under the mission, it has been assured to supply potable water to every household instead of just building infrastructure. In the financial year 2020-21, Rs 11,000 crore was allocated for the Water Life Mission (JJM).
