Reliance Jio Infocomm (RJio), a wholly owned subsidiary of Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL), has started field testing of 5G network in four circles of the country. The company is preparing the base through testing before the commercial rollout of 5G network. Testing is being done jointly with partners and using their own technology.

Testing is being done in Mumbai using its 5G technology, while testing is being done jointly with Ericsson in Delhi, Nokia in Pune and Samsung in Gujarat. Industry sources said the firm is also gearing up to start testing in Hyderabad. The company’s technology partner for Hyderabad could not be immediately ascertained. However, the commercial launch will not happen soon as the government is yet to provide spectrum and licenses for the rollout of 5G services.

RJio is testing its network and equipment using both mmWave and mid-band spectrum. RIL’s digital arm, Jio Platforms Ltd (JPL), had earlier announced that it has achieved 1 Gbps (message delivery over a communication channel) throughput from a single cell and will demonstrate its 5G capabilities in the coming months.

JPL developed 5G technology and the basic infrastructure which included radio technology, macro base stations, small cells, indoor cells and core software networks (supporting cloud technology), all internally.

RJio’s move follows similar testing by its competitor Bharti Airtel, which has started testing 5G network in Cyber Hub area of Gurgaon in 3500 MHz mid-brand spectrum. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) had earlier allotted spectrum to Airtel in four telecom circles – Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Delhi.

Earlier in March, RJio had acquired spectrum worth Rs 57,123 crore in all 22 circles. There was a move that would enable it to provide LTE service and upgrade to 5G in the future. The company had acquired spectrum in the 800 MHz, 1,800 MHz and 2,300 MHz bands at an effective cost of Rs 60.8 crore per MHz. Along with this, the company had recently allotted extra spectrum in major circles to provide better connectivity and service.
