The Government of India has started taking donations, gifts from abroad. This was banned in the Manmohan government.
The most important and major change is about China.
At this time, the country has got badly caught in the new wave of Corona. In this situation, to win the war against Corona, the Modi government changed the foreign policy of the 16-year-old Manmohan Singh government, due to which some relief is seen. However, due to this the campaign of ‘Self-reliant India’ has also weakened.
Corona Crisis is being discussed all over the world in India. In difficult circumstances, governments and corporate support around the world came to the fore. The situation here was deteriorating due to which the Modi government agreed to seek help while making important changes in foreign policy. According to the report published in Dainik Bhaskar, so far more than 40 countries have helped India in different ways. It is important to know here that what has been India’s foreign policy to help in the era of Congress and what important changes have been made by the Modi government in this.
What did Manmohan Singh do in 10 years?
Before Narendra Modi became Prime Minister in 2014, there was a government of Manmohan Singh (Congress-led UPA) from 2004-2010. It was in 2004 when the terrible tsunami caused weeds in the states of South India, including Tamil Nadu. Many countries offered help to India, but the Manmohan government said that we will deal with the situation ourselves. Foreign help will be taken if necessary. However, this did not happen. After that there was an earthquake in Kashmir in 2005, 2013 an avalanche in Uttarakhand, the Singh government did not take foreign help even in the cases of 2014 Kashmir floods. Many countries had repeatedly offered help, but the government turned it down with respect.
What changed in foreign policy under Modi government?
Bhaskar’s report specifically mentions three things. First- the Government of India has started taking donations, gifts from abroad. This was banned in the Manmohan government. Even if something from abroad is coming here for free distribution, IGST has also been waived. Another change in foreign policy has been made that state governments can purchase medicines and medical equipment from abroad at their level. Apart from this, if they are getting any other kind of help, then they can take advantage of it.
What changed policy regarding China
The most important and major change is about China. The Modi government says that in Corona Crisis, there is no ideological problem in procuring oxygen equipment or medical needs from China. However, there is a need to understand that when last year there was a boundary dispute on LAC, the Modi government canceled many deals with China. Companies in India which have Chinese investments also faced problems. Now the government has given permission to buy oxygen equipment. However, there is still doubt on whether to seek help from Pakistan or not. The people of Pakistan and the Imran Khan government there have appealed for help in many ways including oxygen cylinders and medicine.
Don’t see it as a change in policy – Foreign Secretary
Say a change in policy or the government says about foreign help, India has not asked for help from any country. In this time of crisis, the governments of other countries themselves are offering help. Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla said that this should not be seen as a change in policy. It is a matter of mutual cooperation and should also be seen as such.
