New BIS License

The government has given big relief to startups, small industries and women entrepreneurs. The government also said that the services of BIS will now be available to everyone for free and can be downloaded from the e-BIS standardization portal.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is a governmental body that sets the Quality Standards. The bureau issues licenses with standard markings. This helps in identifying the units that manufacture the products at a particular location.

10% extra rebate to existing licensees

Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Piyush Goyal has written on Twitter, the government has given a 50 percent discount on new BIS certification for startups, micro industries and women entrepreneurs. He said that 10 percent additional rebate has been given to the existing licensees. This will give impetus to the ‘Vocal for Local’ campaign.

Fixed yearly marking fees based on product

According to BIS Director General Pramod Kumar Tiwari, more companies are expected to come under the purview of licensing and certification arrangements by offering exemption for new licenses. He said that the minimum annual marking fees for new licenses vary from product to product. For example, the fee for water is around Rs 1,60,000.

Referring to the new steps taken by BIS, Tiwari said that several steps have been taken to reduce the compliance burden on the parties concerned. He said that the entire process of certification, including the issuance and renewal of the license, has been automated with the standard online portal of e-BIS.
