The central government has taken a big step for the health workers fighting COVID-19. The government has decided to introduce a new system for settlement of insurance claim of death of health workers due to corona. Under this, now the district officers will authenticate the insurance claim and the insurance company will accept and settle the claim within a period of 48 hours. The safety of healthcare providers on the front lines is the first priority of the central government.

Let us inform that under the Prime Minister’s Garib Kalyan Package (PMGKP), the insurance scheme for health workers fighting COVID-19 was extended for one year. Under this scheme, the government gives an insurance cover of Rs 50 lakh on the death of a health worker during the treatment of corona patients.

Insurance policy has been extended twice

The government prepared this scheme for the care of COVID patients and for those people who have come in direct contact with COVID-19 patients and were at risk of getting affected by it. This scheme is being implemented through the insurance policy of New India Assurance Company (NIACL). Till now the insurance policy has been extended twice.

Claim will be settled in 48 hours

The state and other stakeholders were taking up the matter that there is delay in settlement of insurance claims. In order to reduce this delay and make the settlement of insurance claims smooth and easy, it has been decided to introduce a new system for approval of claims, according to which the State Governments at the level of District Officers will work as expeditiously as possible.

The District Officer shall certify in each case that the claim conforms to the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) of the scheme. On the basis of this certificate from the District Officer, the insurance company will approve and settle the claims within a period of 48 hours.

Further, for uniformity and speedy disposal, District Officers will also take action as far as possible and also authenticate the claims in cases of Central Government Hospitals/AIIMS/Railways etc.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has informed all the State Governments and Union Territory Administrations about this new system, which has come into force with immediate effect.
