At least 10 killed as landslides hit western Indonesia

Landslides occurred in Indonesia’s western province of Riau
Islands on Monday, leaving a minimum of 10 useless and a number of other others
lacking, a rescue official stated in a press release, Trend stories citing
Xinhua.

Heavy downpours and unstable soil situations have been blamed for the
pure catastrophe in Natuna Regency of the province, the spokesman
of National Disaster Management Agency Abdul Muhari stated.

“The number of casualties may rise,” stated Junainah, head of the
Emergency Unit of the provincial catastrophe administration and mitigation
company, including that the search and rescue operation for the victims
continues to be underway.

Junainah additionally stated that poor climate situations and poor
telecommunication entry had hampered the rescue operation.

Responding to the catastrophe, the search and rescue workplace in
Natuna Regency had deployed a joint-rescue workforce to the scene, Yusuf
Latief, spokesman of the nationwide search and rescue workplace instructed
Xinhua by cellphone.

The workforce consists of troopers, law enforcement officials, firefighters and
personnel of the native catastrophe administration company, he stated.

“The workforce is now on its strategy to the scene by ship however unfavorable
climate situations and big waves hampered their entry to the
scene,” Latief stated.
