“Whenever people buy furniture for their home, café or office, they want the furniture to be made of new and good wood. Customers often ask what wood the furniture is made of. But, I believe that everyone should take furniture very thoughtfully. Because we have already done a lot of damage to our forests to supply wood. Even now, we are throwing things away using once, which is wrong. ”, Says 32-year-old Samran Ahmed.
Samran, who lives in Mangalore, Karnataka, works in furniture making. However, the most interesting thing is that he uses old and used wood again to make furniture. They use wood or furniture to make furniture after demolishing old, dilapidated houses and buildings.
Talking to The Better India, he said, “Our family has been associated with this work for the last 40 years. We get people to break up their old and dilapidated houses. Whatever doors, windows, wooden planks or anything else comes out of these houses or buildings, we buy them. Father used to sell all these things to other customers earlier. But, now we make different types of furniture, using all these things again. ”
Samran, who graduated in business management, returned to his homeland after working in Dubai for a few years. He says that about four years ago, he started taking over his business and also gave it a facelift. His firm is named ‘SAFA ENTERPRISES ECO WOOD SOLUTIONS’ and the purpose of the business is to reduce, reuse and recycle things.
Better steps towards the environment:
He further states that whatever old wood he finds, he collects it and brings it to him. After this, their artisans clean all the wood from the rotten part of the wood. Then the good woods that are left are used. He says that about 90% of the wood and other items from such old houses or buildings are used again.
He said, “The wooden strips or planks we get, we use them to make new furniture. Apart from this, we correct the doors and windows which can be fixed with little effort. Also, many old things give a facelift. Like – we made a table for a customer’s café with old windows. ”
Apart from this, he also makes windows, doors, cupboards and other furniture for people’s houses from these old wood. He told that many people feel that things made with such wood do not run much. but it’s not like that. Because the older the wood, the better it is. He said, “Nowadays it is very difficult to get old wood. If we use the previously used wood again, it becomes cheaper and lasts longer. Also, by doing this you will be able to help stop the felling of trees. ”
Gives customers a chance to #DIY:
Along with this, he tries to work according to the customers. He said that is the trend of #DIY these days. People have many ideas, but lack of resources. For such people, Samran’s firm is nothing short of a dream. Because Samran believes in acting on the idea of his clients.
One of his clients, Anvita Rai, says, “I have a ‘zero west café’ in the city and when I was preparing to open it, I saw furniture in many places in the city. But I did not feel anything right. Because almost everywhere people are using new wood to make things. I also looked at options for second-hand furniture but did not understand anything. ”
But when Anvita reached Samran’s place, she not only got a good job, but according to her idea, she got her furniture made. He told, “As soon as I told him my idea, he immediately showed me the old window and door with him. I made four tables using old windows. In addition, a large table was also made through the old door. In addition, they also had old used pine sticks. With which he made me a chair, which can be used as a ladder if needed. However, many of my acquaintances said that using old wood may not be right. But, I had to think about the environment first and I am happy that the furniture made by Samran is very good not only in looking but also in quality. ”
Samran says that when making furniture, he always makes sure that there is minimal waste. Their effort is to work as much as possible in eco-friendly ways. Currently, he has 11 artisans working with him. Samran explains to them the need and idea of customers. And the artisans turn all ideas into reality in very good ways.
Finally, he says, “We reuse around 600 tonnes of old wood throughout the year. I never calculated how much we are able to help the environment with this. But, it is definitely known that if someone is using new wood to make furniture, at least three trees will be cut for it. Now you only think how many trees will be cut every year like this. But if people reuse old wood, a lot of trees can be saved from being cut down. ”
